3-Day Homeless Count Begins in Los Angeles with 6,000 Volunteers
Los Angeles County is mobilizing 6,000 volunteers for a three-day effort to count the homeless population. Frustration has grown among California residents due to lawmakers’ inability to curb the surge. Homelessness has surged by 70% in LA County and 80% in the city since 2015. In 2023, over 75,500 people were reported homeless in LA County, marking a 9% increase from the previous year.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a homelessness state of emergency in 2022 and initiated efforts to move over 21,000 unhoused individuals into temporary shelters in 2023.
